Comparing 9, The Short, and 9, The Full-Length Movie
Hello and welcome to or welcome back to my blog! In todays blog I am going to be comparing the short film and the full length versions of 9.
Short Film:
The short film was really cool. At first when I noticed there weren't any words I was a little skeptical of how much I was going to like it but after catching on to what was going on I was hooked. The plot made me a little sad when I realized that 9 was trying to get back at the monster that killed its friend and in the end freed all of the souls. The character development was my favorite. 9 went from someone who was oblivious and ran and hide to someone who was by themselves and facing their fears to free everyone. An effect that made me a little confused was the fade between 9 running and then sitting on top of the ledge. During my first watch I thought it was a different thing but when I re-watched that part it was clarified. This short film met all the criteria of a thriller. I felt the suspense when the monster was coming close to 9 and I was on the edge of my seat when 9 and the monster were face to face on the plank.
Full-Length Film:
I think the full movie was really cool. The plot was very similar to the short film but there was more depth through it. We got to see 9 go through a longer journey and meet other characters along the way. 9 went through the same character arc but because we got to see more of his journey the development was a lot more impactful then what I got from just the short film. This full length film also hit the conventions of thrillers. I still got all the emotions of suspense and anticipation but it lasted longer and was heightened at different points in the movie because it was longer and had more to the plot.
Comparison:
Qualities that the short film had that the full length did not was the very strong visual element. Since the short film had no words, as an audience member you have to look at and analyze what you see in front of you to understand everything. There aren't any words added to help paint the picture. Something accomplished in the full length that the short did not have was giving the audience a chance to better understand the other characters in the story. In the short we only got to see 5 for a short amount of time and make inferences about 9 based off what we saw him go through. In the full length film, 9 meets two first and then later meets five and the rest of the bags. I don't think I could pick one that I enjoyed better. I really liked that the full length had talking but watching the short film without dialogue was strong too. I think if someone were to pick one to watch over the other, it would have to be based off what they are feeling at the time.
